This is a wonderful moving fictional story set amongst ruined lives and infrastructure of Hamburg in the aftermath of the Allied fire bombing and German defeat. I was lost in the writing and it was only during cups of tea stops that I remembered I knew those in the real world who inspired the fictional narrative. This is a story woven with great skill and integrity where a complex cast of characters have all been brought to tangible life and the reader gets to know them and fully understand their complex motivations and their darkest demons.
Best book of the year so far - utterly compelling, fascinating on so many levels: historically, romantically. Didn't want it to end. Can't wait to see it as a film
