Great Book, great insight and well worth reading for everyone
very enlightening
I second (and third, and 100th) the comments already made about this splendid book -- wise, informative, important, a beautiful blend of the scientific and the personal.
Michael Baum is one of the leading breast cancer surgeons in the world. He is also a humanist, a scholar, and a caring human being.
This book is a personal history of his career achievements, his private and professional battles, and his sense of values.
I loved being in his mind as he wrestled with an understanding of how breast cancer develops and how best to treat it.
I loved his ability to draw on his Jewish background and his exposure to the arts as well as science to deal with the situations he faces as a clinician.
I loved his insights about fractals and his recognizing the similarities between broccoli and breast glandular tissue.
Clear, understandable, two-way communication between healthcare providers and healthcare consumers is a requirement for improved healthcare delivery. This book provides insights into the thinking of a highly qualified, compassionate healer.
I recommend it enthusiastically to everyone who cares.
A great story of a wonderful adventure through live. Also, great science on a politically touchy subject

A great book written by a great person
I was so impressed I used this book as the basis for my Editorial in Part One of the Medico-Legal Journal for 2011: "Breast Cancer:Does Universal Screening Do More Harm Than Good? Discuss."
A well-written account from an established health professional in breast cancer.
Outstanding read! The Author has a unique command of the English language utilizing wit and humor to inform the reader. I’ve learned much about the natural history of breast cancer. The author is a true visionary whom has challenged the status quo of traditional breast cancer care forcing the physician community to press forward with courageous research.
Congratulations to Michael - this is absolutely a great book.

A wonderful read - an excellent blend of true life, work & research
An illuminating book written by a `proper' expert with humanity and knowledge, and a little fun. This book gives hope to patients - and their families - for the future care and understanding of breast cancer.
Brilliant book.
Such an informative and well written read.
What a great book - easily read by patients, family and doctors alike. It is essential, brilliantly researched information and should sell well and be in every library.

This book is brilliant!
Amongst many things this very readable book is about honesty in the quest for knowledge and how not to forget you are human in the process; perhaps more importantly, how not to forget why, and for whom, you were seeking that knowledge in the first place. The author raises many more thought-provoking questions than can be answered in the space, and at this time, questions which anyone involved in breast cancer, whether as professional or (potential) patient should be asking themselves and each other. Admirably for a scientist who has spent a lifetime at the forefront of the field, he raises questions about the limits of science untempered by humanity, and the humanities, having seen too often what happens to people when it is not, and claims that "one should buttress the other like the two columns of an arch with the patient as the keystone."
Great book- moving stories- lots of facts told in a very lucid manner and interweaved with personal anecdotes. A must read
A book for every woman - and every woman's man - every household. Telling it how it really is, in lay terminology - and a jolly good read!
As the publisher of Breast Beating we were delighted that it has been shortlisted for The People's Book Prize Spring 2011 in the non-fiction section. Michael Baum's story is fascinating on a personal, professional and spiritual level. We are proud to have published Breast Beating and we firmly believe that the respect and admiration he has gained from his peers during his career both as a surgeon saving lives and in cancer research should be more widely known and appreciated by the general public.
